Matt Szczur made his major league debut in 2014 and has seen major league time in parts of the last two seasons ... is in his seventh pro season after he was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Cubs. Has batted .224 (30-for-134) with seven doubles, three homers and 13 RBI in 80 major league games for Chicago ... has appeared in 32 games (12 starts) in left field, 17 games (four starts) in right field and 15 games (eight starts) in center field. Owns a .281 batting average (613-for-2,179) with 361 runs scored, 113 doubles, 19 triples, 26 home runs and 195 RBI in 561 career minor league games. Has drawn 199 walks while striking out 347 times in 2,442 total plate appearances. Led the Southern League with 144 hits in 2013. Was named a 2013 Southern League mid-season and post-season All-Star ... was named a 2012 Florida State League mid-season All-Star. Named the third-best prospect in the Cubs system by Baseball America following the 2011 season. Was selected to the Team USA roster for the 2011 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game, July 10, at Chase Field in Arizona. Attended Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pa., and enjoyed a stellar two-sport (baseball and football) career ... in 2010, was the first .400 hitter for Villanova since 1997, batting .443 to earn First-Team All-Big East honors. His .443 batting average in 2010 was the fourth-highest in school history and his .392 career average ranks fifth in school history. Donated peripheral blood cells to a young leukemia patient who only had a 1-in-80,000 chance of finding a match ... missed 10 games during the 2010 college baseball season due to medication taken in advance of the donation ... was featured on ESPN's E:60 and was named one of their top stories of 2013. A wide receiver, he led the Wildcats football team to the quarterfinals of the Division I Football Championship in 2008, the national title in 2009 and the semifinals in 2010. Selected by the Dodgers in the 38th round of the 2007 draft, but did not sign. Graduated from Lower Cape May (N.J.) Regional High School in 2007.
