Cubs News: Javy Baez updates his injury status

by - Senior Editor -

Cubs second baseman Javy Baez was drilled in the left elbow by a two-seam fastball by Cardinal pitcher Jack Flaherty in the third inning of Sunday's rivalry game.

Baez fell to the ground for several minutes as he received medical attention from the Cubs trainer. He eventually got off the field and went to the clubhouse as Addison Russell replaced him in the game.

The standout second baseman spoke to the media following the 5-0 loss.

"I'm fine. It's just really sore, it got me really good right on the elbow," Baez said. "I thought the pain was going to go away right away but it kind of numbed my whole arm and even my ribs. We've been icing it. It feels pretty sore, but I know I'm good."

Baez did not receive an X-ray on his elbow and he wants to try to play against the Dodgers in the series opener.

"I hope I'm in there," he said. "If I have to take another day, we will. But if I have to play, hopefully I can. We'll see tomorrow."
