Graveman amounts to an insurance policy for 2020. He will most likely be out all of 2019 while he rehabs from TJ surgery. Apparently, if he can return in 2019, his salary gets raised to $2M. Maybe a good move to protect the rotation for 2020, but does NOTHING for their needs now. I'm not impressed.

It's a done deal. I just don't see what good it does for 2019. Yes, Theo has to worry about having a rotation in place beyond 2019, but in the interim, we still need bullpen arms, a shortstop, and maybe a starter. Great to look ahead to the future, but saving for a vacation now does me no good if I don't pay the electric bill this month.

He was the former A'S Opening Day starter the last two years. Could be good in 2020. It's worth the gamble to get a 28-year old starter at that low of a price.

Sometimes, you have to do a few of these before the gamble pays off.

I agree- they need to prepare for 2020, especially with Strop, Hamels, Duesning, Kintzler and Cishek all gaining free-agency, but unless we are doing a total tear down, they need to worry about the here and now.

I think 75% of Theo's pitching strategy is to take castoffs and pitchers coming off injuries on the cheap. Seems like we do this every year.

I agree about cast-offs, though I wouldn't call Darvish and Chatwood "on the cheap."
