“I don’t know,” pitcher Kyle Hendricks said. “It’s tough to guess on him. You can’t guess on him. You can be all over the board.”

Hendricks met briefly with Maddon before Tuesday’s workout and was eager to see him display the energy of a first-year manager.

“We know Joe,” Hendricks said. “We know who he is. But you can tell he’s excited, just talking to him briefly. He’s ready to go. That’s something that’s translating to the whole team. There’s a lot of energy right now. Guys are excited to be here and to get going.

“It’s been a long offseason, which we haven’t had the last few years, a little too much time for us to ourselves. We’re ready to get back together as a group and get going.”

10:05 a.m. MST: Addison Russell goes through workout

Nearly all of the Cubs pitchers performed light work in the morning, but the biggest development was the appearance of shortstop Addison Russell.

Russell worked out with his teammates for the first time since being suspended for 40 games for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic abuse policy.
