Cubs News: Bumgarner outduels Arrieta at Wrigley Field

CHICAGO -- The Giants scored early and never looked back in a playoff-like atmosphere as the Cubs were unable to complete a comeback as they fell 3-2 in front of 41,250 fans at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs played game 3 of 4 against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday afternoon. The Giants scored early as Tommy La Stella had a throwing error to first base, allowing the Giants to score putting the score at 1-0 early.

The Giants were able to score once again in the 4th inning to extend their lead to 2-0. The Cubs scored a run in the 5th inning as Arrieta had an infield single as Javier Baez scored, putting the score at 2-1. However, the Giants were able to score again on a wild pitch by Arrieta putting the score at 3-1.

Ben Zobrist scored on a sacrifice fly by Baez, as the Cubs put the score at 3-2 in the 7th inning. Arrieta pitched six innings allowing four hits and the three total runs. He also walked two batters and struck out seven as Trevor Cahill came in for him in the 7th inning. Arrieta's season ERA is now at 2.84 on the season.

The Cubs were unable to get anything going in the 9th as they fell to the Giants 3-2. The key play in the ninth was Anthony Rizzo was tagged out rounding second base after Fowler bunted.

One positive note is that the Cubs relievers were solid again pitching three shutout inning giving the Cubs a chance in the game.

The Cubs will play game 4 of 4 against the Giants on Sunday as John Lackey will faceoff against Johnny Cueto on the pitcher’s mound.
