Cubs celebrate Labor Day with comeback win over Brewers

by - Senior Editor -

CHICAGO -- The Cubs blasted the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 on a beautiful 81 degree Labor Day at Miller Park in front of 43,662 fans. This was the #89th win for the Cubs and makes them a season-high 41 games over .500 as they are on pace for 105 wins. The Cubs are rolling down the stretch as they have now won 30 of their last 38 games and their magic number for the playoffs is down to ten.

Cubs pitcher and National League Pitcher of the Month Kyle Hendricks was on the mound on Monday afternoon as the Cubs have won five of the last seven N.L. Pitcher of the Month awards. He finished August going 4-0 with a 1.28 ERA in six starts.

He went six strong innings for his 14th win of the season giving up only five hits and a run while striking out six. His gaudy ERA is now down to 2.07 on the season which is tops in the major leagues. He has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last eight starts dating back to May 22 which is the longest streak in the majors.

Hendricks actually did not allow a hit on his change up for the 12th time this year according to ESPN Stats.

In the second inning, Brewers outfielder Chris Carter hit his 33rd homer of the season to left-center field to start the scoring at 1-0.

Outfielder Jorge Soler had a bloop RBI single to left field to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning.

One of the crucial plays of the contest happened in the top of the seventh inning as pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan had a RBI single on a line drive to right field to score Miguel Montero with two outs to put the Cubs up 2-1. A quirky play followed as the Brewers second baseman had an error as he tripped on a groundball when he fielded the ball as Coghlan quickly scored to add to the Cubs lead at 3-1. La Stella doesn't get a RBI on the play since it was an error.

The first three runs by the Cubs were with two-outs.

Matt Szcuzur scored on a fielding error by the shortstop; Baez had a RBI bunt single to score Russell, and Coghlan continued his impressive play with a RBI single that scored Baez to make it a laughable 7-1 score in the eight inning.

During the game, Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was booed in his home ballpark as flocks of Cubs fan on their off day journeyed to Miller Park. Braun hit his twenty-fifth home run of the season to left field in the ninth inning.

Jason Hammel will take the mound against Brewers righty Willy Peralta (5-0, 5.53 ERA) on Tuesday night at 7:10 pm CT.
