First Look: Cubs 10-game homestand

by -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs will host their third homestand of the 2017 season with visits from National League Central Division rivals Cincinnati Reds May 16-18 and Milwaukee Brewers May 19-21, followed by the San Francisco Giants May 22-25.

On Thursday, May 18, the Cubs will commemorate the 70th anniversary of Jackie Robinson playing his first game at Wrigley Field – the only remaining Major League ballpark in which Robinson played. The game on May 18, 1947, drew a paid crowd of 46,572 fans to Wrigley Field, which remains the largest paid regular season crowd in ballpark history. Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter, Meta Robinson, will help raise a new flag honoring his legacy on the ballpark’s right field foul pole. The team had previously flown a “JR 42” flag on Wrigley Field rooftop following the retirement of Robinson’s number 42 by Major League Baseball in 1997.

The previous day, May 17, is Majestic Jersey Day at Wrigley Field. Following Wednesday evening’s game, Cubs players will give the jerseys “off their back” to Majestic’s guest fans, plus two lucky fans hand-selected at the game.

Fans tuning in to watch the Cubs face the Brewers on CSN Chicago Friday, May 19, will hear from guest broadcaster Kerry Wood, while Ryan Dempster will join the television broadcast Saturday, May 20. Both former Cubs will fill in for television analyst Jim Deshaies.

Tickets remain available at www.cubs.com or 800-THE-CUBS (800-843-2827). Highlights of the homestand follow.

Among a host of new staple food and beverage offerings announced for this season, fan-favorite Hot Doug’s continues rotating its selections from Platform 14, located behind the center field scoreboard in the Budweiser Bleachers. Served this homestand are the Jim Bullinger, a Vienna jalapeño-cheddar beef sausage with jalapeño mustard, pico de gallo and pepper jack cheese; the Les Lancaster, a beef and pork Thuringer sausage with Goose Island beer mustard, caramelized onions and shredded cheddar cheese; and the Joe Wallis, a curry bratwurst with curry dijonnaise, caramelized onions and smoked gouda cheese.

Cubs Charities and Community Events:

On Wednesday, May 17, Kyle Schwarber, with support from Cubs Charities, will launch “Neighborhood Heroes,” a campaign designed to recognize first responders and honor their heroism, personal courage and devotion to duty. Kyle will meet with and host 45 police officers, firefighters and military veterans at that night’s game.

On Friday, May 19, Cubs manager Joe Maddon will continue his support of Chicago nonprofit organizations through his “Respect Community” T-shirt initiative. After every Friday home game, Maddon represents a different Chicago nonprofit by wearing the organization’s T-shirt during his postgame press conference. This week, Maddon will represent City Year, an education-focused organization founded in 1988 dedicated to helping students and schools succeed.

On Monday, May 22, Jake and Brittany Arrieta will partner with City Year to support facility enhancements at Jahn Elementary School in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.

On Thursday, May 25, Cubs Charities, together with the Warren Park Youth Baseball League, will evoke memories of 1988 at Wrigley Field by celebrating the first night game at Warren Park thanks to a $100,000 investment from the Cubs Charities Diamond Project.
