Kyle Schwarber was on the Mully and Hanley Show on 670 The Score on Friday and shared that he still wants to pursue catching despite his serious knee injury he suffered in 2016.
“Obviously, I still want to catch,” Schwarber said during the radio interview. “And I’m not oblivious (that) we have one of the best young catchers in the game in Willson Contreras. That guy’s one heck of a catcher. I’ve had the pleasure to play with him in the minor leagues and to see him how he’s kind of grown into the player he’s become now. What he’s going to become, it’s going to be special." Schwarber thinks that he could still spell Contreras at catcher because he has a true passion for the position. However, he will not jeopardize his long-term future on demanding to play catcher instead of left field. “But I still feel like I have something to give back there. I have a passion for catching. I’ve done it my whole life. And I still feel like I have something to offer. But at the end of the day, it comes down to that injury. If we feel like it’s going to be smart to put me back there after having the big blowout.” During the 2016 World Series, he hit .412 with seven hits, a double and two RBIs to help the Cubs win their first World Series in over 100 years. In 2015, Schwarber hit .246 with 16 home runs, 43 RBIs with an outstanding .842 OPS in only 69 games (273 at-bats) in his rookie season. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the first round (4th overall) in the 2014 MLB Draft.
