Nats use franchise record 7 stolen bases to down Arrieta, Cubs

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals stole a franchise record seven bases and ran away with a 6-1 win over the Cubs on Tuesday evening to even the series.

The game was billed as a great pitching matchup between former CY Young winners Max Scherzer and Jake Arrieta and was the first meeting between two former CY Young Award winners since 2008 with Brandon Webb and Jake Peavy. However, it was a tough night for Arrieta (L, 7-6) as he fell victim to stolen bases and walks and lasted only four innings after giving up five runs. Meanwhile, Scherzer (W, 9-5) cruised to the win, allowing only two hits and one earned run in 6 innings.

Nationals shortstop Trea Turner stole 4 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 hits to lead Washington. The Cubs managed only 2 hits on the night - a double by Tony La Stella and a RBI triple by Kris Bryant.

Cubs Catcher Miguel Montero came into the game 0-24 throwing out bases runners and allowed 7 more against the Nationals in the first four innings.

Chicago will have another tough assignment on Wednesday as the Nationals will hand the ball to Stephen Strasburg (8-2, 3.57). The Cubs will counter with John Lackey (5-8, 4.74). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM CT.
