Commentary: Spring Training's 1st Day out

by - Correspondent -

Any fan of baseball is excited when spring training starts. We get to see the players acquired in the offseason, our favorites and new prospects. It also means the start of the new season isn’t far behind; we see who makes the cut to be on the roster, for the regular season.

Friday afternoon was the first game of Spring Training as the Cubbies were playing the Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale Park in Phoenix. Official attendance was 4,489 in a park that holds around 7,000 attendees; not too bad for the first game. I know I wish I had been there, instead of listening to the game, on my cell and watching the box plays, on my laptop (couldn’t get volume). Can’t have it all, right? I was excited none the less, mainly to see who would be playing and how well.

Tommy La Stella, Kyle Schwarber, and Ian Happ played early in the game, La Stella hitting an RBI single in the 3rd inning and Happ making a sliding catch in center field.

However, the Brewers ended up winning 2-1 on the day.

Looks like these Cubs players especially Happ and La Stella have been working hard in the offseason. I’ve had a soft spot for Happ, since last year. I think he’s got a lot going on and with yesterdays catch he’s proving it. Someone needs to tell him it’s just the beginning of Spring Training, not the playoffs. If he continues to play like that, he has no worries about keeping his job, at least in my eyes.

These guys need to play their best though because they have competition; hungry new prospects who want to be on the roster too. Who should we watch, well it is too soon to tell, Spring Training just started. Keep paying attention though, because I think we’re going to see some a couple new guys on the roster during the season.
