Cubs News: Contreras criticizes Darvish's play with two outs

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs were banking on free-agent signee Yu Darvish to help them back to the World Series in 2018 and beyond.

His $126 million contract was given in hopes that he would solidify the rotation, but so far he has done the polar opposite being winless in four starts with a woeful 6.86 ERA. It's still very early in the season to lose any hope on the strikeout artist.

However, after Saturday's 5-2 loss Willson Contreras was pointing out that Darvish might be lacking complete focus.

“I think he looked like he got too comfortable once he got two outs,” Contreras said about walking the pitcher that led to a five-run inning.

“He walked [pitcher] and then the fake bunt [by Anderson] I think messed around with Darvish in his head,” he said. “It looks like he got too comfortable when he got the second out. In the big leagues no matter how many outs there are you have to keep attacking the hitters. I hope we learn from that.”

The veteran pitcher told the media that he disagreed with Contreras' opinion of his pitching style.

"I don’t think so. I treat every pitch and every batter as the same regardless of how many outs I have," he said.

This is not a great start by Darvish with his new ballclub but hopefully, he will turn it around and eliminate some of the big innings in the near future.
