Cubs drop in ESPN's MLB Power Rankings

by - Senior Editor -

ESPN released their latest article with their major league power rankings on Monday and had the Chicago Cubs down one spot to No. 2 overall behind the surging Houston Astros (8-4). The Cubs had a preseason ranking of No. 1 and currently have a mediocre 6-6 record on the year as they were just swept in a three-game series at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cubs were ranked No. 1 in the rankings 25 out of 27 weeks last season. More importantly, they won their first World Series in over 108 years and trying to go for back-to-back titles this year.

"Kris Bryant went homerless in his first 10 games this season but hit a pair on Saturday to get off that schneid," ESPN said. "On the flip side, Jake Arrieta has allowed three home runs over his past two starts while struggling to deliver much heat on his fastball; his current average (91.5 mph) would be a career low."

The Top 10 teams in the rankings were the Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and New York Yankees.
