Cubs option catcher to Triple-A Iowa

The Chicago Cubs announced on Sunday that they have optioned rookie catcher Victor Caratini to Triple-A Iowa. The roster move was made to make room for veteran catcher Rene Rivera who will start today's game at catcher and bat seventh in the lineup.

In 2017 in 41 total at-bats, Caratini batted .268 with a homer, two RBI, and .318 on-base percentage. In the minors this year, he was impressive batting .344 with 24 doubles, 10 homers, and 59 RBI.

He was drafted in the second round by the Atlanta Braves in the 2013 MLB Draft.

The Cubs currently have injured Willson Contreras and veterans Alex Avila and Rene Rivera at the catcher position.

Contreras was seen doing rehab work on the field on Sunday morning.
