Cubs pursuing another All-Star pitcher

by - Senior Editor -

The Cubs are not done improving their ballclub for the second half of season even after the acquisition of 2016 All-Star Jose Quintana from the cross-town Chicago White Sox.

Multiple outlets are reporting that the Cubs are now pursuing Oakland A's pitcher Sonny Gray to help them this season and beyond.

"Cubs continuing to show interest in Sonny Gray, even after Jose Quintana trade. One reason: Vacancy still remains in '18 rotation," MLB Insider Jon Morosi tweeted.

Gray has a 4-4 record with 4.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 74 strikeouts, and only 25 walks this season and was an All-Star in 2015. He was drafted 18th overall by the A's in the 2011 MLB Draft.

This is tremendous news for Cubs fans as Theo Epstein is not going to go down without a fight as his team is only 5.5 games back of the Brewers in the National League Central. More than likely, Jake Arrieta and John Lackey will not be back next season for the Cubs so Gray would fit it nicely in their future plans. He will be a free agent in 2020.

The trade deadline is still a few weeks away on July 31.
