Cubs News: Epstein updates Morrow's playing status

by - Senior Editor -

New Cubs closer Brandon Morrow was good when he was available but has been out since mid-July due to a bone bruise in his pitching elbow.

However, Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein said that Brandon Morrow is being shut down for the rest of the season.

"Every time he pitched, it got worse," he said.

The bone bruise was not healing enough to get him ready for action. He is expected to be ready for spring training next season.

For this season, Morrow has an impressive 1.47 ERA, 22 saves, and a 1.08 WHIP.

This is not good news as bullpen arms are extremely important in postseason play as managers only use their most trusted guys in high leverage situations. Morrow was counted to be the guy like he was used for the Dodgers against the Cubs just last year.

Now the Cubs will have to hope that Pedro Strop recovers from his injury in the next two weeks because he might be placed into the closer role if the Cubs make postseason play. If he isn't ready, possibly Justin Wilson gets the nod or they just go with best matchups available depending on the situation.
