Cubs News: Jon Lester on Arrieta still being unsigned: "That's ridiculous"

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs veteran starter Jon Lester doesn't mince words when he speaks.

Lester told reporters on Friday that that something fishy might be going on will Jake Arrieta and other stars are not being signed with it being so close to the beginning of the 2018 season.

"There’s no reason why Jake Arrieta or JD Martinez or any of these guys should have to sign a one-year deal," Lester said. "That’s ridiculous. There’s too much money in the game. There’s money to be spent, and for whatever reason, it’s not being spent."

Cubs infielder Tommy La Stella is also anxious about where his friend and former teammate will end up next.

“He’s a great competitor and a great player, so it’s going to be tough to imagine him falling into a situation that doesn’t line up," La Stella said.

Lester is not a fan of potential pace of play rule changes.

"I think it’s a terrible idea. It’s all terrible," Lester said. "The beautiful thing about our sport is there’s no time. To be honest with you, the fans know what they’re getting themselves into when they go to a game."

Lester thinks that the mound visit is an integral part of the game and should not be tampered with.

“There are reasons behind the mound visit," Lester said. "He’s not just coming out there and asking: ‘What time are we going to dinner?’ Every game has a flow. That’s what makes it special. I’m sorry I’m old-school about it, but baseball’s been played the same way for a long time."
