WATCH: Baez leaves game after getting drilled in elbow by Cardinals

by - Senior Editor -

Scary news to report tonight as Cubs second baseman Javy Baez was drilled in the left elbow by a two-seam fastball by Cardinal pitcher Jack Flaherty in the third inning.

'El Mago' crumbled to the ground and received medical attention from the Cubs trainer PJ Mainville for several minutes. He was grimacing in pain and walked off the field to the clubhouse and left the game.

The standout 25-year old doesn't wear an elbow guard and the 90 MPH fastball nailed him right on the bone.

Addison Russell was to have a day off but now has came into the game to replace Baez.

Maddon said during an in-game interview that he didn't think the injury was serious but he couldn't grip the bat.

"It got him right in the elbow," Maddon said. "You know how your hand goes numb at that particular time. You just can’t get the feel back. I don’t think it is anything serious but right now it is going to hurt all night and into tomorrow."

On the season, Baez has 14 homers and 46 RBIs. If the Cubs have to put him on the DL, they could bring up infielder David Bote (.286 with 11 homers) from Triple-A.

Update: Cubs said that Javier Baez has a left elbow contusion, but he will likely get an X-ray as a precaution.
