Overshadowed by the excessive home-run hitting in Friday's 14-6 Chicago Cubs win over the Washington Nationals was an impressive milestone reached by Cubs starting pitcher Cole Hamels in the second inning. Hamels got Nationals second baseman Brian Dozier to whiff at strike three, and, once Cubs catcher Willson Contreras fielded the dropped strike and fired to first base to record the out, Hamels climbed an important leaderboard by way of his 2,465th career strikeout.

Moving into sole possession of 40th place on MLB's all-time strikeout leaderboard, Hamels, who struck out five on the night and picked up the winning decision to improve to 4-0 on the season, was his normal calm self after the noteworthy K. Whether or not Hamels was aware of the feat when it happened is unknown. Regardless, the accomplishment is worthy of celebrating. In addition to being 40th overall in strikeouts, Hamels has tallied the ninth-most strikeouts of any left-handed pitcher in major-league history.
