WATCH: Cubs fan appears to take foul ball from child

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — When it comes to baseball games, there is nothing more cringe-worthy than a grown man taking a ball away from a child, and one Chicago Cubs fan did just that in the Cubs' matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field on Sunday.

On a foul ball hit on the first-base side, Cubs first-base coach Will Venable picked up the baseball and tossed it to a young boy sitting in the front row with his mother. However, the ball got away from them and fell behind their seats, where a heartless man took the souvenir and gave it to what one could reasonably assume to be his girlfriend or wife.

Leaving the boy and his mother visibly disappointed after losing out on a chance to get a foul ball intended for them, the man did not seem to care, as he and his significant other beamed with delight while the crestfallen kid looked on.

Although it is nice that the man was so eager to provide his lady friend with a thoughtful gift, he should have picked a better souvenir to give her than one that he essentially stole from a little boy. He will pay the consequences, of course, by way of the large-scale Internet infamy that he is sure to receive for his callous act.

Update: Radio host and reporter David Kaplan reported that the man actually helped the boy get a ball earlier in the game.

"I spoke with people from the Cubs," Kaplan said. "The man who grabbed the ball on the widely seen video had actually already helped the little boy get a ball earlier. The young man has a game-used ball and a "Javy" Baez ball. All is well. The guy is A-OK, so let it go, people."
