Cubs News: Yu Darvish getting his confidence back

by - Senior Editor -

One of the most important Cubs topics for 2019 is the health of starting pitcher Yu Darvish.

Darvish had elbow surgery last September but is on track to have a bullpen session next week. If all goes well, he could be ready for the start of spring training or at least by the start of the regular season. Another positive note is that he has added 15 pounds of muscle this offseason to help with the physicality of a full season.

Darvish didn't skip the Cubs Convention and said that he is getting his mojo back in time for the 2019 season.

"Finally, I’m getting the confidence, and I’m so happy about it."

Darvish is ready mentally to have a bounce-back season for the Cubs.

"Way different than last year,” he said, "because I know the beat writers, I know teammates well. Now I feel like my place is here. I feel more comfortable, and I have more confidence than last year."

"If I’m healthy the whole year, I can help the team," he said.

Darvish is also a big fan of new pitching coach Tom Hottovy.

"He’s a great guy," Darvish said. "He always give me the confidence -- a positive board (to bounce off of.)"

Darvish had a 1-3 record with a 4.95 ERA and 1.43 WHIP last season.
