Cubs News: Baez on steal: "It's something I didn't plan"

by - Senior Editor -

Cubs second baseman Javier Baez has been a superstar in the postseason and it carried into the NLCS game one with an incredible steal of home.

He became the first Cubs player to steal home in the postseason since Jimmy Slagle in Game 4 of the 1907 World Series and also the 19th different player to steal home in a postseason game in history and the 6th player to do it in the wild card era.

"It's something I didn't plan ... but I got it," Baez said to reporters after the game.

Dodgers catcher Carlos Ruiz threw the ball to third baes and Baez made no hesitation as he sprinted home instead of retreating.

"I went a little bit too early," Baez said. "But I saw him ready to throw the ball, and I didn't want to get in a rundown, so I just kept going home."

Baez max speed on the play home was 19.6 MPH according to Statcast.
