Chapman: "The Cubs have never expressed any interest"

by - Senior Editor -

Former Chicago Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman spoke with ESPN's Marly Rivera on Monday and said that Chapman is looking for a long-term contract but did not specify the amount he wants.

"The only thing I have expressed that I would like is a six-year contract," the left-hander said. "I know that doesn't mean that I will get it, but that's what I would like to sign. There are rumors out there that I requested $100 million, and that's not true at all. I believe that if you deserve something, you don't ask for it."

Chapman thinks it's unlikely that he will return to Chicago in 2017.

"The Cubs have never expressed any interest in re-signing me, as far as I know," he said.

He was 4-1 with a 1.55 ERA with 36 saves and 90 strikeouts during the regular season in 2016. In the postseason in 15.2 innings, he had a 3.45 ERA with four saves while striking out 21.

For his career, he has a 2.08 ERA with 182 saves and 636 strikeouts.
