Cubs benched Soler several times for lack of hustle

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs traded young outfielder Jorge Soler for closer Wade Davis during the offseason to fortify their bullpen for the 2017 season.

Cubs vice president of player development Jason McLeod said during the Cubs convention over the weekend that the Joe Maddon had to bench Soler several times for his lack of hustle during games.

"Coaches get on guys all the time," McLeod said. "There are a few times throughout the year where a player will get pulled out of the game," McLeod said. "This is not trying to harp on 'Georgie' at all, but he got yanked a couple of times last year for not hustling out to the outfield, for not running down the line."

Soler batted .238 with 12 homers, 31 RBIs, .769 OPS and an on-base percentage of .333 on the season in 86 games. During the postseason, he had only two hits with 13 at-bats and three walks.

For his career, he is a .258 hitter with 35 doubles, two triples, and 27 home runs.
