Cubs News: Hammel takes out newspaper ad: 'Thank you greatest fans on the planet!'

by - Senior Editor -

Former Cubs starting pitcher Jason Hammel had an impressive regular season run with the team as they won their first World Series run since 1908. He was 15-10 in 30 starts with a 3.83 ERA with 144 strikeouts and a 1.21 WHIP in 2016.

Hammel was left off the postseason roster but was not bitter about the ending to his Cubs career as he heads to free agency and awaits his new baseball destination.

He took out a full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune to thank the Cubs fans, his Cubs teammates and coaching staff, and Cubs management.

"Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for all of the love and support you have given us over the past three years. I can't adequately describe what it was like to step on the mound at Wrigley Field every fifth day and pitch in the great park, in the great city, in front of the greatest fans on the planet!"

"Our time in Chicago was so much more than that," Hammel said. "It wasn't just the baseball connection to the city that we've cherished; Chicago became our home and you became our neighbors.

"While the Cubs' chapter of our lives is now closed, the memories and friendships we have made will last forever."
