Cubs News: Maddon gives update on Fowler's injury

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs centerfielder Dexter Fowler pulled up lame while running to first base after hitting a ground ball in the first inning on Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fowler left the game with some right hamstring discomfort and was replaced by rookie Albert Almora Jr. in center field. Fowler had an MRI on Sunday morning and was not in the lineup against the Pirates on Sunday night.

"I really don't know the overall plan," Maddon said to reporters. "I hope to finalize that … but as of right now, we have not made any conclusion."

"This first part of the season really took on the tone that it did because of him," Maddon said. "When I say, 'You go, we go,' it's pretty much true. When he's making things happen at the top, the rest of the group seems to fall in order. … You [would] hate losing him. You hate losing a guy like that. But if you do, you just move it along and somebody else will show up."

If Fowler misses some extended time, Albert Almora Jr. and Matt Szczur are two quality backups that are waiting in the wings.

For the season, Fowler is batting .290 with seven home runs, 28 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .398. In his career, he is a .269 batter with 72 homers and 319 RBIs.
