Bears request an interview with Klint Kubiak for OC opening |
Everyone knows this will be a big offseason for the Bears, especially when you look at this roster and some of the choices they have to make. One of the toughest choices this team will have is whether to hold onto their No. 1 pick and take Caleb Williams or stick with
Justin Fields as the franchise guy.
Whether they keep him or not will only matter if they find the right play caller, which could be an even bigger decision for this Bears team. Knowing the importance of finding the perfect playcaller for this team, the Bears are expected to interview many candidates and have their second interview set up in the coming days. This one comes from Klint Kubiak, who is the current passing game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. When you hear the name Kubiak associated with the NFL, the name Gary Kubiak comes to mind, as he was one of the game's best offensive minds for over three decades. He is also Klint's father, so offensive genius runs in the family. Not only does Klint have the experience of working with his dad, but he is also part of the Kyle Shanahan system in San Francisco, and from all accounts, that is the premier offensive scheme in the NFL right now. He may not be the play caller for the 49ers, but he is the passing game coordinator, and when you look at Brock Purdy's success this season, he deserves a ton of credit for his success. This has been what he would like to call a revelation season for himself as he spent the 2022 season as the QB in Denver as part of the Nathaniel Hackett staff. We saw how that worked out as Hackett was gone after just one season, and the Denver offense was about as broken as could be. Before his time in Denver, Kubiak spent several seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, including as the team's offensive coordinator in 2021, where Kirk Cousins went on to have an outstanding season. He is an experienced play caller, but most importantly, an experienced offensive mind, which the Bears desperately need if they want to draft and develop a QB or even get Fields to the next level. Sticking with his last two successful stints, Kubiak was in Minnesota for three seasons and was brought there to join his father as part of the offensive scheme. Once Gary elected to retire due to health reasons, the job was given to Klint, and the Vikings offense performed well as they were a top-five unit in yards and points that season. However, his tenure in Denver didn't go as planned, as their offense was near the bottom in most categories and had Russell Wilson looking the worst he has ever been. This season, Kubiak has gotten back to his roots and has been working alongside Shanahan to create one of the more dynamic offenses in the NFL led by Mr. Irrevelant Brock Purdy. Sticking with Purdy for a second, for the most part, he has played like an MVP all season, apart from a few games. He has a great shot at winning it, and if Kubiak can do that to him, imagine what he can do with an athletic QB like Fields or the No. 1 overall pick should the Bears do that. Kubiak is no stranger to the Shanahan system, as he has been a part of several teams that have used some variation of that offense. His coaching career started in 2010 with Texas A&M before moving to the NFL in 2013, where he was with the Vikings in 2013-14 before latching on with the Chiefs in 2015. Kubiak then went to the Broncos before landing back in Minnesota and returning to the Broncos. Kubiak is one of the more respected offensive minds in the business, and all you have to do is look at his stops around the league to see why. He has the experience the Bears are looking for, knows what it takes to develop a young QB, and, most importantly, knows what it takes to build a good offense. He isn't the only candidate for this team, but when you look at who the Bears are setting up to interview right now, he is the best man for the job and would be an excellent hire for this team.
