Cubs News: Ben Zobrist signs autographs at his Single-A game, uses new walkup song |
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Chicago Cubs utility man
Ben Zobrist made his long-awaited return to the diamond on Friday night, as he took part in a Single-A contest for the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium. Although South Bend defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 2-1, Zobrist appeared to be rusty while taking part in his first live action since May 6.
Zobrist went 0-for-3 with one walk in four plate appearances, but it was the first leg on what was already expected to be a long journey back to the majors. The veteran affectionately known as "Zo" has until August 31 to be removed from the restricted list and rejoin the Cubs if he is to become postseason eligible, and it would not be surprising if he remains in the minors until late August. #Cubs Ben Zobrist taking BP at ?@FourWindsField? for the ?@SBCubs? pic.twitter.com/U2z6q7dmmd Zobrist flies out to right field on a full count pic.twitter.com/ctDKgY2kfJ Ben Zobrist stuck out swinging for his second at-bat of the night pic.twitter.com/SiRiQxciwl Ben Zobrist draws a walk. pic.twitter.com/mHudofKcYH Another fly out for Ben Zobrist. Stepping into the batter's box with "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers playing as his new walkup song, Zobrist was greeted with hearty ovations each time that he dug in at the plate. Of course, security obliged, and the supporters in attendance were thrilled to have the chance to meet and greet a star big leaguer. There is no definitive timetable at this time concerning Zobrist's stay in Single-A ball, but the Cubs are certain to be as patient as possible with Zobrist throughout his August rehab stint.
