Cubs News: Maddon reacts to 1-5 start: "We got to get the bullpen defined"

by - Senior Editor -

Another day and another ugly loss for the Chicago Cubs as they have started the 2019 season with a pretty shocking overall record of 1-5.

The Braves ended up sweeping the Cubs by finishing they off 9-4 on Thursday night behind a strong pitching performance by starting pitcher Max Fried and an impressive 5-5 hitting night by outfielder Nick Markakis.

Cubs veteran manager Joe Maddon spoke with the media following the loss about the tough start to the season.

"I've been here before so it's not heavy for me," he said. "The biggest thing if you have been able to watch all of our games, we have actually played some really good baseball. We've had a couple of bad games here. We've got to get our bullpen in order. We played well in Texas. We hit the ball well like you saw at the end of the game today. No question we have to play a more complete game of baseball and we will. We got to get the bullpen defined."

The Cubs pitching this season through 49 innings has given up 61 hits, 46 runs, and an insane 41 walks.
