Cubs News: Joe Maddon reportedly on the hot seat |
The Chicago Cubs are currently on one of their biggest winning streaks (6) of the season and everything appears to be all roses for the North Side.
However, USA Today senior writer Bob Nightengale shared that Maddon might not have as much stability within the organization as fans think. "Maddon wants to continue managing, but if the Cubs fail to make the playoffs, or go out quickly, his fate is tenuous, several baseball executives told USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity," Nightengale said. "The executives did not want to speak publicly about Maddon's situation." This is very surprising but Maddon does have a six million price tag which is the highest in baseball along with Mike Scioscia and Bruce Bochy. During Tuesday's interview with McNeil & Perkins on 670 The Score, Nightengale said that Maddon managing the Cubs in 2020 was 'a flip of the coin' but went on that he needs to reach another World Series this year or next fall. Maddon's current contract expires after the 2019 season. Obviously, I can see a scenario if the Cubs don't make a deep run either the next two seasons, the Cubs could theoretically make a move to get a more cost-effective manager. I guess we will all wait and see how it all unfolds this season and next. If the #Cubs moved on from Maddon, I would walk onto the @thekapman's STL set and rant for 10 minutes about how dumb it was to fire the manager who has the best record since '15, has the best club house in baseball, has a never quit culture, and who always finishes strong. https://t.co/58rDhd9uU2
