WATCH: Bote makes game-saving throw on incredible defensive play |
CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs third baseman David Bote has rapidly progressed over the course of his first big-league season, and he pulled off an incredible defensive play against the San Diego Padres on Friday that effectively saved the game for the Cubs.
With Chicago clinging to a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth, the Padres' Cory Spangenberg attempted to score on a chopper hit by Manuel Margot toward third base. Bote quickly fielded the ball and proceeded to fire a bullet to catcher Victor Caratini, who then applied the tag to keep the Cubs' lead intact. Going on to win 5-4, the Cubs had Bote to thank for his game-saving play. After garnering the save, Cubs reliever Pedro Strop saluted Bote and displayed his appreciation for his efforts. Put this directly into my veins. #Cubs pic.twitter.com/o14f5ShMHd Speaking after the game about the impact that Bote has had on the Cubs this season, Chicago manager Joe Maddon told reporters that the young third baseman "has earned the respect of everyone in the Cubs clubhouse." And Bote's perfect execution of a difficult play in a tight-knit situation on Friday exemplified why that respect is well-deserved.
