WATCH: Contreras smacks grand slam to put Cubs up big on White Sox |
CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs started the Crosstown Classic against the Chicago White Sox with a bang, scoring five runs in the opening inning of game one at Wrigley Field.
White Sox starting pitcher Carson Fulmer struggled mightily in the opening frame, hitting a batter and giving up three hits. Fulmer really hurt his chances of making it a successful outing on the hill by allowing Cubs catcher Willson Contreras to take him deep for a grand slam that putt the Cubs up 5-0. Hello. A 393-footer just over the wall in center, the homer exited the field at 108 miles per hour, with Contreras making solid contact on a Fulmer fastball thrown right over the plate. Marking Contreras's second home run of the season, the grand slam gave the Cubs a sizable early edge on their local rivals. The grand slam was the seventh ever hit by a Cubs player in the Crosstown Classic and only the second one to come in the first inning.
