Cubs News: Kris Bryant headed to the DL, infielder recalled

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed third baseman Kris Bryant on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to July 24) with left shoulder inflammation and recalled infielder David Bote from Triple-A Iowa.

Bote will make the start at second base for the Cubs this afternoon as they conclude their four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.

The 25-year-old Bote returns to the majors for his fifth stint this season. He has batted .310 (13-for-42) with three doubles, one homer and nine RBI in 20 games with the Cubs, clubbing his first major league homer on July 4 vs. Detroit. In 61 games with Iowa, Bote has hit .268 (63-for-235) with 10 doubles, two triples, 13 homers and 41 RBI.

Bote was originally selected by the Cubs in the 18th round of the 2012 Draft. He enjoyed a breakout season last year with Double-A Tennessee, batting .272 (128-for-470) with 30 doubles, three triples, 14 homers and 59 RBI in 127 games while turning in a .792 OPS to earn mid- and post-season Southern League All-Star honors. Bote continued his strong 2017 by hitting .333 (23-for-69) with four homers, 14 RBI and a .931 OPS in 19 games in the Arizona Fall League to earn All-Star honors.

Bryant, 26, is batting .276 (84-for-304) with 21 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 76 games with the Cubs this season.
