Cubs organization considering extending protective netting at Wrigley Field |
CHICAGO — Phil Rosenthal of the
Chicago Tribune wrote an article,
which was published on Monday, about the possibility of the protective netting at Wrigley Field being extended. Ever since the awful foul-ball incident at Minute Maid Park involving Cubs center fielder
Albert Almora Jr., several clubs, including the Chicago White Sox, have decided to extend the netting at their ballparks, and the Cubs could be the next to do so.
Cubs Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs responded to Rosenthal's query on the subject by saying, "We are currently exploring and researching expansion of protective netting. No decision has been made to date." Green also said that the complex design of Wrigley Field, as well as the stadium's reputation as a landmark, has caused Cubs executives to consider the netting options a bit more carefully than some of the teams with newer ballparks. Emphasizing that the sloped nature of the brick walls in foul territory will not make for a simple installation of protective netting from foul pole to foul pole, Green indicated that the Cubs organization is carefully weighing its options for increasing the netting. Green said, "While there are some teams that have moved faster than others, we have to ensure any solution we explore at Wrigley Field can be installed and secured properly, given the configuration of our field walls, which are unique, given our landmark status."
