Cubs reportedly told Boras to check with Cubs before Harper signs elsewhere

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs are hopeful for a better upcoming season from several of their young hitters that never progressed liked they hoped in 2018.

Too many bad strikeouts, non-productive outs while not moving runners over led to some frustrating plate appearances by the likes of several of the prominent hitters.

However, there is one guy that would immediately add some pop to the lineup with slugger Bryce Harper.

Most observers think that the Cubs are out of the running for his services. However, not so fast according to a recent report by the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Sources say Epstein urged them to wait before accepting an offer from another team until the Cubs had a chance to try to move some payroll off the books and check again with ownership."

Boras will probably take his time before helping Harper make a decision.

"Not much has changed in that regard, either, since then — though Boras’ track record with top free agents suggests Harper might be on the market well into January, if not longer."

Obviously, the Cubs will do their due diligence regarding Harper and it's always possible that the massive contract doesn't work out for Harper from other teams and the Cubs can make eventually a play for him. I guess we will all wait and see how it goes.

Harper hit .247 with 34 homers, 100 RBIs, and had an on-base percentage of .393. In the NL statistical rankings, he was sixth in homers, 8th in RBIs, 6th in runs (103), 1st in walks (130), and 10th in OPS (.889).
