Cubs News: Fans will be allowed at Wrigley Field for Opening Day |
It's finally happening!
The Chicago Cubs will have fans in the stands on 2021 Opening Day (April 1). Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced on Monday morning that the Cubs and White Sox would be able to have 20 percent capacity to begin the season. "Folks, we've significantly slowed the spread of COVID, getting our positivity rate down to 2.8%. And now, we can begin to safely welcome fans back to our baseball stands on opening day," Lightfoot posted. "Although we’re reopening, masking is still of utmost importance." For the Cubs, that means 8,274 fans, and for the White Sox at Guaranteed Field, that will be 8,122 patrons. A few rules include mandatory mask-wearing for fans two-years and older, parties must stay six feet apart in pod-style seating, mobile tickets with touchless entry, and cashless concessions and shops. Season ticket holders will get the first shot at tickets. “To welcome Cubs fans home to Wrigley Field and bring back one of the joys of spring after a challenging year is incredibly rewarding,” said Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney in a press release. “We’d like to thank Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot for their tremendous leadership in carefully navigating this important milestone and partnering with us on our plan to safely return fans to the ballpark. As the City continues on the path to safely reopen, we’re excited to finally say, ‘Welcome home, Cubs fans!’” “In coordination with MLB, top health experts and local officials, we developed a comprehensive plan that prioritizes the health and safety of our players, staff and fans,” said Kenney. “Our goal is to create a safe, clean, and friendly environment for everyone to enjoy Cubs baseball beginning Opening Day.” Cubs manager David Ross reacted to the news of fans returning to Wrigley. "You can't get any better than that, fans back in the stands," he told the media Monday. "We're super grateful for that. Can't wait to get back to Wrigley with some fans in the stands."
