Cubs News: Injury updates on Jose Quintana, Kyle Schwarber

by - Senior Writer -

Chicago Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber was scratched from Wednesday's lineup with a bruised knee caused by an HBP in Tuesday's game. Cubs skipper David Ross told the media that Schwarber would be available for an emergency situation but would likely not play against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.

"I don't want to push that," Ross said at Progressive Field. "You start messing with a bruised knee and where that got him, a pretty good spot, that ball that hit him.

"You just don't want to create a lot of bad habits with swinging and getting into your legs and being tender or gentle within your legs and hitting. It can create a lot of bad habits really fast, and he’s been having some of our best at-bats."

Meanwhile, Cubs starting pitcher Jose Quintana is working his way toward returning to action. Quintana suffered a freak injury to the thumb of his throwing hand while washing dishes last month, requiring surgery. The lefty has yet to pitch in the majors this summer, but he tossed three innings in a simulated game in South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday.

When asked about Quintana, Ross said, "Talking to him, [there are] no real issues. I think he's just got to continue to build stamina. Feedback was good from the coaching staff down there yesterday. All of the feedback was good."

Quintana has not exactly been missed thus far, as Alec Mills has filled the void in the Cubs' rotation quite nicely. However, Quintana will definitely be a welcome addition to the North Siders' pitching staff whenever he is able to return.

Update: Schwarber pinch hit in the ninth inning of the Cubs' 7-2 win over the Indians on Wednesday. He struck out swinging in what served as his lone plate appearance of the night.
