Cubs News: Injury updates regarding Willson Contreras, Cole Hamels

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — After Chicago Cubs battery mates Willson Contreras and Cole Hamels were seen warming up together at Wrigley Field over the weekend, some positive news surround the starting catcher and starting pitcher emerged on Monday. Both players are on the injured list as of now but could be returning to the Cubs' lineup rather soon.

While speaking with the media on Monday, Contreras said that he is healthy and at full strength and hoping to return when he is eligible to be activated from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. He also informed reporters that he expected to partake in batting practice, like he did this past weekend, on Tuesday. Contreras has been recovering from a strain of the arch of his right foot.

Hamels is nearing the end of his recuperation from a left-oblique strain, and it was revealed on Monday that he would make his first rehab start for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs on Tuesday. Iowa is set to do battle on the road against the San Antonio Missions on Tuesday night, and Hamels is slated to pitch in the contest. Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy told the press that Hamels is scheduled to throw approximately 40 pitches, and the next step for Hamels' road to recovery will be mapped out based upon how the left-hander feels after that.
