MLB to expand its 2020 postseason to more teams |
The 2020 MLB season will certainly be filled with all kinds of interesting new things.
The latest is an expanded playoffs from 10 teams to 16 teams as the MLB Union has agreed on adding more teams to the playoffs this season. The agreement is now subject only to ramification by the owners and then it will become official. The 16 playoff teams will only be for this 60-game shortened season. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, all second-place teams in the six divisions will quality for postseason and the 7th and 8th playoff teams will be chosen by the best record left of the group. All first round matchups will be three game series. It's pretty exciting stuff for baseball fans as more than half of the teams will make postseason play. The union has approved the agreement discussed with MLB for expanded playoffs, only for the 2020 postseason; that agreement is now subject only to ratification by the owners, sources tell ESPN. https://t.co/HFmaEQ8Npk Interesting wrinkle in the 16-team playoff format: All second-place teams in the six divisions qualify. Then the 7th and 8th teams will be chosen by best record among other teams.
