Cubs recalled lefty pitcher from Triple-A

by -

MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia from Triple-A Iowa. Outfielder Mark Zagunis has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa and placed on the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. Chicago’s active roster now stands at 33 players.

Garcia will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Garcia, 32, signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on August 31 after going 3-6 with a 5.93 ERA (49 ER/74.1 IP) in 25 appearances, 13 starts, with the Toronto Blue Jays this season before being designated for assignment on August 25. He began the season in the Blue Jays rotation and made 13 starts but endured two stints on the disabled list due to left shoulder inflammation. He pitched in relief upon returning from the second stint and recently tossed seven scoreless outings in August, totaling 5.2 innings, allowing only one hit, one walk and fanning seven in that span.

The southpaw is a veteran of 10 major league campaigns with the St. Louis Cardinals (2008-16), Atlanta Braves (2016), Minnesota Twins (2017), New York Yankees (2017) and Twins (2018), going 70-61 with a 3.84 ERA (481 ER/1,127.1 IP) in 210 appearances, 187 starts. In all, 12 of his 23 career relief outings have taken place in 2018.

Zagunis, 25, batted .272 (101-for-371) with seven homers and 40 RBI in 115 games with Iowa this season.
