CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was asked on Sunday about what Cubs fans should expect for the second half of the season, and he discussed how competitive the race for the National League Central pennant is going to be. With all five teams in the division still very much in the running for first place, Rizzo touched on the how that intense competition will affect the Cubs' second half.
"At the end of the day," Rizzo said, "it's about winning the division, and we're in a good spot going into the second half."
The Cubs, who entered Sunday a half of a game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central, are scheduled to play a whopping 45 games against division opponents following the All-Star break. Rizzo noted that the bunched-up standings will add to the excitement of the Cubs' second-half schedule.
"It's going to be fun," Rizzo said. "We play our division a lot in the second half, and it'll be exciting."
When asked by a reporter what convinced him that the Cubs would be able to step their game up out of the All-Star break, Rizzo simply listed the key players on the Cubs' roster, implying that the impeccable talent boasted by the North Siders has them set up to accomplish anything. Saying that the "list speaks for itself," Rizzo drove home the point that the Cubs have no reason to underachieve the rest of the way.
