WATCH: Baez lays out for incredible diving stop |
Chicago Cubs sensation
Javier Baez has thrived at his former full-time position of shortstop early on in the 2019 campaign, with the usual second baseman serving as the Cubs' full-time shortstop during
Addison Russell's time away from the club. Prior to becoming a major leaguer, Baez was a regular shortstop, and he showcased why that was the case with an impressive diving stop of a hard-hit grounder against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mariners third baseman Ryon Healy drilled a chopper into 5-6 hole that had all of the makings of a single to left field, but Baez was able to corral it with a slide and a backhanded grab at the edge of the infield dirt. "El Mago" was then quick to pop back up onto his feet and fire a bullet across the diamond to first baseman Anthony Rizzo for the out, thereby robbing Healy of a hit with a perfectly executed web gem.
