WATCH: Contreras comes up clutch with go-ahead pinch-hit single |
This week has been a week of clutch pinch-hit singles for the Chicago Cubs. On Tuesday, shortstop
Javier Baez smacked a walk-off pinch-hit single to lift the Cubs over the Philadelphia Phillies. Then, on Friday, catcher
Willson Contreras provided the Cubs with a late lead over the Cincinnati Reds via a pinch-hit base knock that came on an 0-2 count.
Following a pitching change in the bottom of the eighth, Contreras, who pinch hit for pitcher Mike Montgomery, did not make it a warm welcome to the mound for Reds reliever David Hernandez. With men on first and second and two outs, Contreras broke a 4-4 tie with a single to center field that plated first baseman Anthony Rizzo and put the Cubs up 5-4. Reds reliever Nick Senzel bobbled the baseball while attempting to corral it, making it easier for the lumbering Rizzo to score. The go-ahead hit gave Contreras his 31st RBI of the season. .@WContreras40 in a pinch: pic.twitter.com/h4R5kardFi
