WATCH: Highlights from 10-inning duel between Cubs, Phillies

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO, Ill. — As if the return to the mound at Wrigley Field by former Chicago Cubs (27-18) and current Philadelphia Phillies (28-19) starting pitcher Jake Arrieta was not exciting enough, Monday's Cubs-Phillies matchup at the Friendly Confines offered plenty of late-game thrills. The extra-inning affair was ultimately won via a solo home run by Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto in the 10th inning.

Winning 5-4 in the opener of the 4-game series, the Phillies benefited from a solid 6-inning start by Arrieta, in which he was taken for just one run. As for the Cubs, they turned a 2-run deficit into a 1-run lead on a wild play in the bottom of the eighth that saw utility man Daniel Descalso convert a line drive to left-center into a 2-run triple that he ended up scoring on because of a throwing error. Leading 4-3 at that point, the Cubs were unable to maintain their advantage, as the Phillies came up clutch in the ninth and 10th frames.
