WATCH: Highlights of Cubs' 8-2 victory versus Cardinals

by - Senior Writer -

ST. LOUIS — Refusing to go down quietly, the Chicago Cubs (83-77), who were eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the week, defeated the St. Louis Cardinals (90-70) at Busch Stadium on Friday. The opening installment of the 3-game set saw the Cubs manufacture a 7-run seventh inning en route to winning 8-2, thereby snapping a 9-game losing streak.

As a result of their defeat, the Cardinals remained one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers (89-71), who also lost on the night, in the National League Central standings. Cubs center fielder Albert Almora showed out on defense by robbing Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina of a home run, and Cubs third baseman Ian Happ stepped up at the dish and drove in two runs as part of a 3-for-5 plate performance.
