Another layer in this mind boggling decision by MLB to join with MGM casino in a partnership. As I mentioned the other day in my potential Pulitzer Prize column, how does baseball do this while continuing to suspend Pete Rose, the Black Sox, and others for gambling?

How do they address last minute player changes? What if something crazy happens, like it does almost every other game, aren't fans going to wonder? Does someone payoff the official scorer to change his call from a hit to an error because the house is holding big on number of hits?

The list is endless and with MLB in bed with the gambling community it just makes you shake your head at why, for the few millions they received as a partner?

Dan, that is one of the most lucid things you have ever said, and I couldn't agree more. People have been betting, though illegally, on baseball for years, through bookies. MLB getting into bed with MGM, will cause nothing but problems, all for a few dollars more. I can already see game fixes, player's playing time being tampered with, and "crucial" decisions being guided more by Las Vegas than by the managers. Furthermore,

I can also see a ton of people who can't rub two nickels together to make a dime, trying to "make money" because they (think they) "know baseball" It happened (and still happens) with the lottery, with scratch-offs and Powerball alike.

This is going to be bad, bad, bad.

It will always trouble me when you agree with anything I write. It's not that I don't appreciate that you do, its that I wonder what I'm missing.

You're missing the fact that you (deep, deep, down) admire my opinions.

Not like they do on MLB games, but small towns and local teams have a much different relationship than say an A ball team in DuPage county. Also, minor league operations don't pay that well so a gambler approaching a minor league umpire and offering him 10% of his yearly salary might be tempting.

I don't know the stats, but people will bet on anything. I've heard of over-unders in Vegas on some pretty strange things- happens every year during the Super Bowl. This year, I know they had odds on who would air a commercial first, Coke or Pepsi. That was just one of about 20 strange things that I knew of.
