He will be better in 2019. His second half was as bad as he can play for sure offensively.

It won't be the new hitting coach, or more sunny days, or new batting gloves, or anything else everyone is looking for to help. It will be finding another catcher who can be effective for 50-60 games so Contreras can get some rest. He just ran out of gas last year.

They obviously made no moves for a catcher this year, so they have about 3 choices:

1) Keep using Caratini
2) Hope that Taylor Davis has a breakout year.
3) Sign a last minute FA catcher. Still available: Martin Maldonado and Matt Wieters. Caleb Joseph got signed today by the Diamondbacks, so other than Wieters or Maldonado, there are no catchers left.

Obviously, they would have liked to get a veteran defensive catcher. However, its difficult because you can only have 25 on the roster. Caratini is too valuable taking only one roster spot as he is a switch hitter and can play first base.

That means he is your backup catcher, he's a pinch hitter from both sides of the plate, and can backup Rizzo some if need be.

He's pretty valuable and they will hope that his hitting comes around because he can hit. He's a keeper if his bat comes alive.

In today's game, you don't really wanna have a third catcher on the roster that could be used instead for an arm in the bullpen.

I agree about Caratini- he is talented-- just needs more time to develop.

Agreed ... he has to hit...eventually they will bail on him if he doesn't produce.

If he is still on the 25 man roster after camp I will be stunned. He can't hit and the Cubs do not need another body that can't hit.

He hits better than Davis (if for no other reason, experience), and he has more experience behind the plate. Not to mention the Rizzo backup factor, though others can do that as well.

It will be interesting who they keep. I think i saw they have 42 pitchers in camp right now evaluating them all for spots.

Only 42 pitchers? Not sure they have enough to make a decision.

As for the critical position of back-up catcher everyone is so worried about, by the end of camp there will be 15 veterans available to choose from and the Cubs can grab one of those guys.

Only 2 free-agent catchers left- Martinaldo and Wieters. It'll be interesting to see what veterans may get cut.
