Welcome 90TigerCub, thanks for the post. I see you joined a year ago, but this is the first post I've seen from you. Stick around and post often, it gets boring and mentally taxing talking to Dan Marich all the time on the boards. lol.
Not sure I quite understand the answer "Yu Darvish," even after thinking about it for a few minutes. I also don't think Bryant is the answer. He's already ramping up the rhetoric about pay, service time issues (although justifiably so), free-agency and contract length. I think he enjoys being a Cub, but I also think he's already planned his departure. I almost have to work backwards to figure out who IS the indispensable one though, and I'm not sure there's only one. For me (in order) it'll be Rizzo, Baez and Contreras. My rationale is below.
Heyward: Great defense and offers leadership, but his sporadic hitting leaves him out. Addison Russell: Can't depend on a guy who isn't allowed to play. Almora: Just not enough experience, but has potential for the future. Bote: Not enough experience, but will be somebody's indispensable man one day. Ian Happ: Don't even get me started. Zobrist: Could get the nod, but with his age & impending free-agency, he'll only be around for 2019. Schwarber: Improving, but he seems too quiet to take on a leadership role anytime soon. Descalso: Brought in to be a leader, but he won't do great in any other role. Bullpen: Nobody, for obvious reason. Rotation: Lester and Hamels are aging, and Hamels will probably be gone after this year. Darvish and Hendricks might be the ones, due to age and contract status, but not yet.
In the future, look for the names Bote, Zagunis and Hoerner to become the "Indispensables."

LOL... please never say David Bote or Mark Zagunis are future indispensable players for the Cubs. Bote batted .239 last season and Zagunis will probably be a throw-in on a future deal in a year or two if someone would trade for him.
Zagunis won't even be indispensable for Triple-A Iowa in a few weeks sadly.
The dictionary definition of indispensable is 'absolutely necessary.'

I think both Bote and Zagunis could mature into being "that" guy. Look through the Cubs' affiliates- who stands out if you had to pick a few names? Amaya? Good prospect, but I don't know enough abut him yet, and haven't seen him play other than an inning the other night. Mekkes? Good stuff, and a future pro, but hard to depend on a pitcher to be the team's anchor. Hoerner? Everything I've read says he has the drive, takes the initiative, and his on-field performances have been great (both last year in the AFL and this spring, not to mention he was a beast at Stanford).
I think Zagunis has potential, although giving him props now may be a little premature. If he keeps going on the path he has this spring, he'll mature into a guy who could make a difference. I'll bet if either Happ or Almora go down to injury or get traded (after this year), Zagunis will be the guy who gets the call. He's already on the 40-man, and came up a couple of times last year.

I'll tell you what's absolutely necessary is limiting Ken's access to the message boards if he is going to write crazier stuff than are in his out there columns.
The correct answer is, of course, Rizzo is the most indispensable person on the Cubs.

Yea the guys that are in the MVP votings year after year are usually the indispensable types: Bryant and Rizzo.
Baez eventually if he keeps up the MVP type numbers in the next year or two.
