Bryce Harper worth it?

I know he is just coming in his prime but really when you look at his numbers he has never driven more than 100 runs even in his best year where he hit 42 HRs
Baseball Reference projects Harper to hit .265 with 27 HRs and 87 RBIs next season. I can see where Theo is struggling to justify giving him $$$

No doubt. Baez posted better offensive numbers last year. I have said that there is no way Harper retains an AAV of $30M over ten years- I'm not sure he's a $30M man now. What will he be like at age 36?

He did have a lead-leading 130 walks last season.

Walks are great, but that helps the OBP, not the BA. Hard to drive in runs when you aren't allowed to swing.

I still say we are indulging a fantasy that isn't going to happen. If I'm wrong, so be it, but I just don't see it.

I don't know what the answer is but to me it feels like the window for the Cubs is going to close without another Championship if they can't get some help.

I absolutely agree. Window is getting smaller and teams all around them are building up. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Reds in third place this year.

I'll just make eyes roll with this, but I truly believe we have a great roster. Sorry we let Chavez go, but wouldn't be surprised to see him back next August. Seriously.

Agreed. I think the Cubs still have a very talented roster despite all the haters. Literally, they ran out of gas and had some huge injuries.

I don't disagree that the Cubs have talent, but the "out of gas" and injury excuses only go so far. Yes, the Cubs got punished due to rain-outs, and yes, guy were injured, but other teams faced those same adversities and worked through them- Milwaukee for example.

At the end of the day, the onus is on each player to play to their talent level. I've no idea what happened to all those previously hot bats, but if even 5 guys get hot and stay hot, we will be in the postseason again next year.

I agree. On the up-side, I don't see how each of them could be as bad this year (offensively) as they were last year (2018). Still, improving those bats makes them equal to the other teams of 2018, to whom they lost, that says nothing of the new offensive matchups for 2019- guys like Goldschmidt and Puig.

How well has Puig done against us overall?

Career: .340/.409/.524. 4 HR, 5 doubles, a triple, 10 RBI. (6 seasons). By the way, baseball-reference already has him pictured in his Reds uniform...

I applaud the Reds for trying to be competitive and getting some decent players but all they did was get a ton of salary and give up two of their best prospects.
I think they will be better of course but not really the way to go by giving up your prospects for a one year run of .500 baseball.
Of course, watch them be dominant...lol

I think they will do OK this year. Puig hasn't been kind to the Cubs, Kemp is always dangerous, and Roark and Wood will add to the rotation. We know of another reliever going to Cincy- shhhh- who will probably have a great year as well.

They might push for third place in the division if all things fall well for them.

I can absolutely see them in third, especially if they keep grinding away for additional help.
