The trouble with these Cubs is that they’re not those Cubs
The NL Central is a brute of a division, but that doesn’t explain the Cubs’ difficulties. Maybe the simplest explanation does: They’re still a good team, but they aren’t what they used to be.

I didn't read the story but the Cubs younger players that played in 2016 were projected to do much better through the years and there have been actual regression in many cases.

The point of the story is that while the Cubs are still good the other teams have gotten better so the delta is much smaller.

That too and I put some of that on Maddon who sits guys when they are hot and plays them when they are cold.
