Drafted by the Houston Astros in the fifth round (No. 137) of the 2013 Draft from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN)... "We loved Tony Kemp," said Astros director of amateur scouting Mike Elias. "The word 'sparkplug' is used quite a bit. He has a ferocious approach at the plate and treats at-bats like they're wars. That wears pitchers out."... projects as a leadoff hitter with great speed... highly-decorated infielder at Vandy, where he was named the SEC Player of the Year in 2013, becoming the second Commodore to win the award (Hunter Bledose, 1999) and third player in SEC history to win both Freshman of the Year and SEC Player of the Year in his career (Auburn's Hunter Morris, Ole Miss' Stephen Head) also first team All-SEC and All-Defensive team... also was named a 2013 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American, 2012 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American, 2012 SEC Academic Honor Roll, 2011 First Team Freshman All-American, 2011 First Team All-SEC, 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, College World Series All-Tournament team in 2011 and 2011 SEC All-Freshman Team... prior to Vanderbilt, he lettered four years in baseball and football in at Centennial High School in Franklin, Tenn... son of Catherine and Rick Kemp; has two siblings, Corey and Ashley. His brother Corey played professionally in the Milwaukee Brewers system from 2008-09... favorites include Curtis Granderson and Ronaldinho (athletes), The Sandlot and Remember the Titans (movies), Lie To Me and ESPN 30 for 30 (TV shows), Denzel Washington and Leonardo DiCaprio (actors), Steak, loaded potatoes and carrots (meal), Drake (musician) and Lucky Charms (late night snack)... told Vanderbilt he likes to sleep and play video games in his spare time... made his Minor League debut on June 17 with Class A Short-Season Tri-City, going 3-for-4... homered in his second professional game.
